Obedience

Hopefully you're inspired to have a mindful dog, that earns the privilege of off leash activities. I found it necessary to train obedience with a plan, being sure to teach, correct and distraction proof each skill. I suggest training an absolute non-negotiable come command, and a steady stay, reliable leave it, sit and down are the tools to direct and guide him from harm.

Training doesn't have to be dry and boring. The learning curve is greatly increased by teaching fun things and games to your dog. Check out this lovely dog who knows her toys: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8441974.stm

Here are 2 video examples of the puppy obedience skills that I taught Ryu's Finest Hour (Winston), a pup from my 06 litter.

Giving a pup a positive foundation skills is the gateway to an obedient companion for life.

Novice level obedience requires dogs to heel on-leash and heel a figure 8 pattern, heel off leash, perform a recall, a stand for exam, and perform sit & down stays for 3-5 minutes while the handler is 20 feet away.

Ch. Ryu's Darwin CGN CD earned his CD under judge Bruce Fraser, March 3, 2007, in Cloverdale BC.

Here is Darwin and Renee earning CKC Novice B leg under judge Vaughn Franske with the Shetland Sheepdog Club of B.C.'s annual obedience trial in Cloverdale B.C., Dec 9, 2006.

NEW CD!!!

At the Shetland Sheepdog Specialty Show and Obedience trail, March 3, 2007, Cloverdale B.C. Canada -

A qualifying score of 192.5 and a High in Class where earned under CKC obedience judge Bruce Fraser.

Open level obedience requires dogs to heel off leash, stand for exam, perform the drop on recall, dumbbell retrieve, directed jumping, jumping over the flat or broad jump, a group 3 minute out of sight sit, and a 5 minute out of sight down.

During my quest to teach my dogs to work with me, I have developed a huge respect for those folks that seriously practice and exhibit obedience with their dogs, those that spend hours training and learning gentler methods.
